"Depth"

Currently, my fifth-grade students are engaged in an identity portrait project, which I find incredibly intriguing as I discuss with them who they perceive themselves to be. In our morning meetings, their classroom teachers delve into the concept of identity and how it shapes our lives. Identity is a complex and ever-evolving notion, with some aspects being constant while others fluctuate. I explain to the children that identity encompasses everything about them, from permanent traits to those that shift, from positive attributes to challenges, and from evident qualities to deeply hidden ones. Although these young students may not be delving deeply into their true selves, they are beginning to analyze the factors that contribute to their identity and future. The artwork “Depth” is a reflection of their journey. It honors individuals who reflect on their influences, actively nurture them, and continuously evolve. We all experience moments of uncertainty and growth, but we can be grateful that we are not all navigating the tumultuous waters of middle school.
